Balanced on his board, Matthew Sawyer is at peace in the ocean

by Kevin Lloyd-Thomas April 09, 2019

For those precious moments, the 34-year-old veteran of the Afghan war is no longer fighting the trauma that followed him all the way home to the Gold Coast.

He isn’t thinking about his mate killed by a rogue allied soldier, nor the friend who took his own life after trying to fight post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

He isn’t thinking about the time an Afghani soldier he was mentoring turned his weapon on him, threatening to kill him.

But once he’s back on dry land, it comes back in waves.

The Lucky Ones

by Kevin Lloyd-Thomas April 09, 2019

From an Australian army, Infantry Vietnam veteran, what a fantastic story and thank you for your service. My older brother Nigel was called up for national service and we were together in Vietnam for 7 months but in different Battalions, so this story resonates with both of us.

The Spirit Of ANZAC

by Kevin Lloyd-Thomas April 05, 2019

I am so proud to have served with the first ANZAC Battalion of the Vietnam War, 2RAR/NZ ANZAC.

I was a member of 1 Platoon, A Company, May 1967/May 1968.

First came Victor Company, then Whiskey Company.

I have fond memories of going to the Victor Company boozer for a Hungi, hope I’ve spelled it correctly, and on several occasions.

If there’s any of our Kiwi mates and brothers in arms who were there at that time, please get in touch.

Why You Need To Ask For Help

by Kevin Lloyd-Thomas July 14, 2018

The stigma of PTS is still a massive problem preventing men and women from asking for help.
Unfortunately, we haven’t learned our lessons from Vietnam, which is why this is still a problem.
Stigma, peer group pressure, and career-threats combine to stop suffering people asking for help, and current research confirms this. My book offers strategies to service people and veterans to find help and take back control; of their lives. The whole family wins when the person suffering asks for help and takes back control of their life.
